The Heritage of John Philip Sousa Series

Nine two-record albums of the music of John Philip Sousa, recorded by the U.S. Marine Band, conducted by Jack T. Kline. The series included most of Sousa's original works for band, some works composed for other media, and several selections from his operettas. [This was the only attempt ever made to record all of Sousa's original band works. Most of his transcriptions of the works of other composers were not included.]

Lehman, after extensive study of the holdings in the recorded sound archives of the Library of Congress. Processed by John A. Johnson of Columbia Records. Final selection by Robert Hoe, Jr. Largely transcriptions of classical compositions, requiring great technical proficiency, but several traditional band works are included. 8, 9. Blasorchester Carl Woitschach, Volumes 1 & 2. Two records of miscellaneous march and concert music played by the celebrated German concert band of Carl Woitschach, re-recorded from old 78 rpm records. Also included on Volume 1 are several trumpet solos played by the British trumpet virtuoso George Swift, with piano accompaniment.

10. Euphonium Solos by Arthur W. Lehman. Except for one solo with organ accompaniment, the performances are with the U.S. Marine Band. Lehman served with the Marine Band from 1947 to 1971. During this period, the directors were William F. Santelmann and Albert F. Schoepper.

11. Euphonium Solos by Arthur W. Lehman. Solos performed with the U.S. Marine Band except for one, which was unaccompanied. Several solos duplicated on 12, below.

12. The ART of Euphonium Playing by ART LEHMAN [Volume 1]. Solos performed with the U.S. Marine Band, these were recorded between 1952 and 1970. A 54-page paperback instruction book of the same name came with the record. Both the book and record were available by personal request to Robert Hoe, Jr. A few copies of a second comical jacket were issued by Hoe as a joke and distributed to close friends of Lehman; these jackets bore the title, Witlis Lehman, the Goofie Yoofie.

13. The ART of Euphonium Playing by ART LEHMAN, Volume 2. Except for one unaccompanied solo, these were performed with the U.S. Marine Band. As with Volume 1, an instruction book (62 pages) came with the record. These, too, were available from Hoe providing a donation was made to the Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association.

14. Trombone Solos by Robert D. Isele. Trombone solos accompanied by the U.S. Marine Band. [Isele was with the Marine Band from 1937-1961, serving under Taylor Branson, William F. Santelmann, and Albert F. Schoepper.] These recordings were available from Robert Hoe, Jr., providing a donation was made to the International Trombone Association.

15. Cornet Solos by Charles P. Erwin. Cornet solos accompanied by the U.S. Marine Band, except for one which was with piano accompaniment. [Erwin enlisted in the Marine Band in 1948 and was solo cornetist from 1958 to 1975. He retired as second leader in 1988.]

16. Robert Hoe V: In Memoriam. An album of concert and march music performed by the U.S. Coast Guard Band (cond. Lewis J. Buckley), as a tribute to Hoe for his contribution to band history. Marches of Charles Ives, Charles W. Storm, Kenneth J. Alford; concert works of Richard Wagner, Johann Sebastian Bach, Jerry Owen.
